About this dried rehan plum
Rehan is an Armenian plum variety in its own right — a garden plum, unlike the wild cherry plum (alycha) elsewhere in the range, and a different, sharper fruit entirely from the sweet Victoria. It is grown specifically for its sourness: dried whole, the skin turns a deep wine-red to near-black, and the flavour stays assertively tart rather than mellowing the way most dried plums do.
No sugar added; sulphur dioxide (E220) is used as a preservative during drying. Contains sulphites. The sourness is simply what this variety tastes like. Not a gentle, everyday sweet; more the kind of thing you reach for when you want a real jolt of acidity.
Stir it into a stew or pilaf the way you would a sour plum sauce, or fold it into a compote or chutney where its sharpness has something to cut through.
